Innovation Insider Publication

Cancer Center at Illinois
ROLE:
Lead Designer
YEAR:
2024
THE GOAL
Redesign the Cancer Center’s publication at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to align with the Center’s visual tone while staying true to the campus brand, and to create an engaging reading experience for impactful stories.
I was hired to lead the design for this project, starting with moodboards to explore visual directions appropriate for cancer research. I collaborated closely with the managing editor to establish story flow and incorporate supporting informational pieces. My goal was to craft spreads that fit each story’s content while remaining practical to reproduce and adapt across the 40+ page publication. This volume received great feedback and is now serving as the template for this publication moving forward.
THE NEXT VOLUME
After a full redesign with vol. 6 (above), I was contracted again to design vol. 7 of the Innovation Insider. I generally kept with the baseline templates from the previous volume – strategically mixing more visual spreads throughout. The goal of this edition’s cover was to visually represent a handful of the stories rather than focusing on design assets from the centerfold.
After noticing that this year’s content had a much wider range of topics, I also decided to take the overall layout design in a more editorial style.
